Negotiating Literature Discussions in Multiple Contexts: Talking About Books with Latinas in Elementary School

This study works to answer the primary research questions: How do Latina elementary school students negotiate literature discussions in both online and face-to-face contexts? In addition, it seeks to answer the subquestions: How does the chosen medium, face-to-face or online discussions, influence these discussions? How do students move between discourse/identities during these discussions? Through the use of mapping conversational turns and broad application of discourse analysis, based on the work of James Paul Gee, this study shows the ways Latina students negotiate in-person literature discussions largely by recreating traditional school-based power structures and blending home and school Discourses. It\u27s okay, I\u27m a...teacher. Is professional status important to teachers?

Teacher accountability and the debate around teacher quality are issues of international importance. As society places increasing demands on the teaching profession, and regulatory bodies around the globe raise the ‘standards’ for teachers to adhere to, the professional status of teachers is drawn into focus. This paper reports research findings of an investigation into the perspectives of professional status of teachers, held by pre-service teachers about to embark on their teaching career. This was a comparative study whereby data were collected from an Australian university and an American university to explore professional status as an international issue. This quantitative study utilised a Likert scale to gather responses from participants. Data were analysed and findings from both universities indicated that professional status was a significant concern for pre-service teachers. Pre-service teachers felt that whilst they may have entered their teaching degree as a vocation, they hoped to receive status, as a professional, within society

Computational design of natural laminar flow wings for transonic transport application

Two research programs are described which directly relate to the application of natural laminar flow (NLF) technology to transonic transport-type wind planforms. Each involved using state-of-the-art computational methods to design three-dimensional wing contours which generate significant runs of favorable pressure gradients. The first program supported the Variable Sweep Transition Flight Experiment and involves design of a full-span glove which extends from the leading edge to the spoiler hinge line on the upper surface of an F-14 outer wing panel. Boundary-layer and static-pressure data will be measured on this design during the supporting wind-tunnel and flight tests. These data will then be analyzed and used to infer the relationship between crossflow and Tollmein-Schlichting disturbances on laminar boundary-layer transition. A wing was designed computationally for a corporate transport aircraft in the second program. The resulting wing design generated favorable pressure gradients from the leading edge aft to the mid-chord on both upper and lower surfaces at the cruise design point. Detailed descriptions of the computational design approach are presented along with the various constraints imposed on each of the designs. Wing surface pressure distributions, which support the design objective and were derived from transonic three-dimensional analyses codes, are also presented. Approximate Solutions For Distillation Rating And Operating Problems Using The Smoker Equations

Algorithms for rapid solution of implicit variables in the Smoker design equations are presented. The accuracy of these solutions in the context of distillation rating and operating problems Is evaluated for distillation systems where more rigorous physical property assumptions are known to apply. Alternative methods of initially fitting the Smoker equations to rigorous tray-by-tray material and energy balance calculations as well as methods extending the procedure to handle multicomponent systems are discussed. These methods are well suited for many optimization, reliability, and control studies as well as for the fast real-time calculations such as interactive computations or on-line control. © 1982, American Chemical Society. The empirical failure of the expectations hypothesis of the term structure of bond yields

This paper tests the expectations hypothesis (EH) using U.S. monthly data for bond yields spanning the 1952–2003 sample period and ranging in maturity from one month to 10 years. We apply the Lagrange multiplier test developed by Bekaert and Hodrick (2001) and extend it to increase the test power by introducing economic variables as conditioning information and by using more than two bond yields in the model and testing the EH jointly on more than one pair of yields. While the conventional bivariate procedure provides mixed results, the more powerful testing procedures suggest rejection of the EH throughout the maturity spectrum examined
